Message From the Dean Spring/Summer 2015

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Olivier_120118_8065As the cover of this issue of Global Health clearly shows, we were thrilled by the results of the most recent U.S. News rankings of schools of public health. Our rise in the rankings demonstrates the hard work of not only our faculty and staff, but also the greater SPHTM community. Whenever you share that you earned your degree from Tulane SPHTM or discuss a collaboration you’ve had with the school or encourage another student to consider SPHTM for their degree, you are helping to demonstrate the success of this 100+ year old academic institution. We are proud of our success and we offer sincere thanks to our alumni and friends for spreading the word!

For more than 40 years, Tulane has offered a combined MD/MPH degree program and the combination of medicine and public health is even more relevant today. Our feature article talks about this vital combined degree program, as well as other ways SPHTM connects and collaborates with the School of Medicine. We’re pleased that the alumni of the MD/MPH program routinely sing its praises and talk about the value the public health degree adds to their career.

You probably know how important reaccreditation is to any educational institution. We are currently preparing for our next reaccreditation with the Council on Education for Public Health in 2017, and in preparation we are asking our alumni to complete the alumni survey we sent out to all of our alumni this past spring. You can visit publichealth/alumni/sphtm-alumni-survey.cfm to access the survey. I hope all of our alumni will help us by taking 10 minutes or so to fill it out.

Best regards,

Pierre Buekens, MD, MPH, PhD
W. H. Watkins Professor and Dean
Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine
